Bigueños Way: Christmas Celebration
Christmas is a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ. This is the
holiday that is shared and celebrated by one and all. Everyone values the
celebration, therefore no matter what happens, people make sure to take part in
it. Celebrating Christmas is a habit that is hard to forget because this
reminds people on how God gave us the gift of His Son and that Jesus Christ
gave us the greatest gift of all.
Due to the covid-19, the Bigueños Christmas celebration in the
heritage city of Vigan during the pandemic is still distinct from the usual
celebration. During the Christmas season, the government loosened its
restrictions for covid-19, allowing the Bigueños to visit and spend time
with their loved ones while celebrating Christmas. Christmas is celebrated
in Vigan by visiting the well-known Heritage village, which features a unique
Hispanic colonial architectural design. The heritage village is not the only
place they visit to celebrate Christmas because they also went to visit
all the tourists spot in the city due to the long absence because of the effect
of the pandemic. Vigan Cathedral, Bicentemial, Baluarte, Syquia Mansion, Plaza
Salcedo, and Plaza Burgos are among them. Tourist attractions are not the only
highlights of the city's Christmas celebrations; there are also delicacies like
empanada and longganisa, which have been known for their own unique recipes
since the time of the Spaniards. During the celebration, they nonetheless
adhere to the government's precautions and restrictions in order to avoid the
corona virus. Bigueños spent Christmas Eve with their families, enjoying
meals with relatives and friends, throwing a party, and exchanging gifts. In celebrating
the party, they still follow the precautions in preventing the virus. They also
went to church to finish the simbang gabi, also known as Misa De Gallo, because
it is believed that finishing the nine-day series of masses will grant your
wish.
Even in the face of the pandemic, celebrating Christmas will always be
the same in the hearts of Bigueños. Notwithstanding the constraints imposed by the
government due to Covid-19, you will still observe people's smiles and laughter
as they celebrate the holiday since Christmas brings meanings to everyone’s
lives.
“The magic of Christmas never ends and its greatest of gifts
are family and friends”
