Its Christmas Time!

Essence of Christmas

“Gifts of time and love are surely the basic ingredients of a truly merry Christmas” — Peg Bracken

Christmas is one of the most important holidays. It is celebrated to remember the birth of Jesus Christ. We Filipinos like spending Christmas with our families, relatives, and friends. Christmas is the time of the year when we normally gather and do things together with a lot of fun, energy, and festivity.

Every year, we celebrate Christmas but, in today’s reality, the coronavirus is already everywhere so, there’s no doubt that the Christmas celebration is different. Due to quarantines, lockdowns, and government limitations imposed as a result of the covid-19 outbreak, our Christmas preparations may change. With a focus on the Coronavirus, we are preoccupied with guidelines on how to celebrate Christmas this year– with only members of the family who are living in the same household. Following the restrictions is a must because the best Christmas gift is to keep everyone safe and away from being infected by any viruses. Numerous adjustments and changes will be experienced in celebrating holidays due to the pandemic. But, let us not be despairing because we can utilize social media and technology to have virtual parties and religious services to connect and spend time with family and loved ones. Even if there is a pandemic, we should not forget to set up ‘Belen’, hang lanterns, attend ‘simbang gabi’ and understand the genuine meaning of Christmas.

Christmas is not all about merry-making. It is sparing time to reflect on the essence of the period which is the love of God for humanity. The spirit behind Christmas is that of giving and sharing. Being kind, giving forgiveness and compassion, showing love to every individual, and having a vision of doing everything with a positive mindset and from a place of love. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. A time for us to understand the lessons from Jesus and reflect on them. Lastly, Christmas is the tenderness of the past, courage for the present, and hope for the future.

“Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection” — Winston Churchill
